The Georgia Organic Peanut Association will have a workshop for Certified Organic row-crop producers in Tifton, Georgia on April 13. New and beginning farmers are encouraged to attend.

Presenters from USDA, UGA, Perdue Agribusiness, Georgia Organics, and others will discuss best practices to start and succeed farming organically. The full agenda is below.

  • 12:45- 1 PM — Registration

  • 1-1:10 PM — Introduction — Donn Cooper, Farm Programs Director, GOPA

  • 1:10-1:45 PM — Overview of the Georgia Organic Peanut Association (GOPA) — Ronny Shingler, Chairman; Chad Heard, President; Perri Cooper, Executive Director

  • 1:45-2 PM — Organic Certification Cost-Share — Michael Wall, Georgia Organics

  • 2-2:50 PM — Weed Control in Organic Production — Dr. Carroll Johnson, USDA ARS (Retired); Dr. Nick Basinger, UGA

  • 2:50-3 PM — Break

  • 3-3:30 PM — Crop Insurance for Organic Commodities — Dr. Kathryn Taylor, USDA RMA

  • 3:30-4 PM — What Perdue Can Do for You: Diversification of Your Cropping System — Mike Garland, Perdue Agribusiness

  • 4-4:45 PM — Utilizing Biological Inputs — Hal Blackmore, Marrone Bio Sciences; Gibbs Wilson, Valent BioSciences

  • 4:45-5 PM — Conclusion — GOPA

There is no cost to attend. Due to COVID-19 precautions, space is limited, and the GA Museum of Agriculture may require anyone entering the building to wear a mask.
